Erstwhile capital of the Rajputs is 131 kms from Jaipur and derived its name from Ajayameru or "invisible hill" to be called Ajmer. Here, one can visit Ana Sagar Lake built between 1135 & 1150 AD. The embankment has a row of elegant, polished marble pavilions built by Shah Jehan and was restored in 1899 by Lord Curzon. Visit The Taragarh Fort which is a rectangular fortress with thick walls and large corner bastions. Proceed towards the Dargah of Khwaja Muin-ud-Din Chishti (1143-1235) where lies the tomb of a Sufi Saint of the first rank known as the "Sun of the Realm of India" -who had come to Ajmer in 1192. Beyond the Dargah is a building of unusual architecture, Adhai Din Ka Jhopra or two and a half day hut. This was originally a Sanskrit College but was later converted into a mosque in two and a half days by Mohammad of Ghori in 1198 A.D.

LOCATION

The city of Ajmer is located in the state of Rajasthan, it is situated 130 km southwest of Jaipur. It is flanked by the Ana Sagar Lake on one side and barren hills of the Aravali range on the other side. Ajmer is drained by streams of the Luni River flowing southwestward and by tributaries of the Banas River flowing eastward. The climate of Ajmer is hot. The maximum temperature can go up to 46°C in summers (April-June). Winters are cool (November-February).

AROUND THE CITY OF AJMER
Pushkar : The sister city of Ajmer, Pushkar is just 11-km away from the city. The road to Pushkar passes through the Nag Pahar or the Snake Mountain. Mangliyawas : This town is famous for two 800 years old trees of a rare species - Adansonia Digitata Linn - popularly known as 'Kalpa-Vriksha'. People visit this place through out the year but on dark moon day of 'Sravana' (also spelt as Shravana) thousands of people come to worship the trees. The town is 26-km from Ajmer. Beawar : This town is located 54-km from Ajmer and is famous for the Badshahi procession festival held on the next day of Holi. On this occasion, people participate in large numbers and throw 'Gulal' on each other.

FAIRS AND FESTIVALS IN AJMER

The main festival of Ajmer is the celebration of the Urs held every year in the seventh month (date varies) of the lunar calendar. A number of Qawali (traditional Muslim recital of devotional verse) functions are held within the Dargah / tomb.

GETTING THERE

Ajmer is accessible by road from both Jaipur and Delhi. It is a nine-hour drive from Delhi to Ajmer. Ajmer is also accessible by train. There is a daily Shatabdi Express from Delhi to Ajmer except on Sunday.
